Where I’m From

This really strange guy came in today and asked if we had any Thanksgiving candles. After I told him no and to check back next month, he kept going on and on about Thanksgiving. birthday… blah blah blah… recreate the first Thanksgiving in wax form… blah blah blah…

Then he asks me, “Do they celebrate Thanksgiving where you’re from?”

I’m from the United States. We celebrate Thanksgiving where I’m from. If you want to know if they celebrate a Thanksgiving where my parents are from then I couldn’t tell you.

Obviously, his question kind of bothered me. Maybe it was just the way he said it or the fact that I really wanted him to leave, but I interpreted his question as, “Hey, you’re not white. You must be a foreigner. Do they have Thanksgiving in the Orient?”

I hope this doesn’t seem like I want to be ‘less Filipino’ or something. I like being Filipino American, I just don’t like it when people assume that I’m not from the country I was born in because of what I look like.

To all bridezillas, motherofthebride-zillas, and other crazies

A) If the wedding is in November, do not wait until SEPTEMBER to order the most expensive and customized invitations.
B) If you do wait, understand that it takes some time to have them printed, even if you paid for a Rush Service. You are not the only one in the United States who is having a wedding.
C) If the vendors and salespersons are doing all they can do to get those invites to you, do not yell at them and say that they don’t have their act together. You’re the one who waited until two months before the wedding to send out invitations, remember?
D) Do not complain that it is expensive. If you want something inexpensive, you can always send a free evite.

Cousins

I love how one corny little photo of us together turns into “zOMG LET’S TAKE PHOTOS OF US ON THE STAIRS LIKE THE BRADY BUNCH!” and “AND BEHIND THE COUCH TOO!”

We’re slowly turning into our parents.

Uh. These pictures were stolen from my cousin’s flickr account, but I don’t think she’ll mind much… we family.

rut

I’ve been thinking of going to grad school since I can’t find a job. The thought of applying and sending a portfolio scares me.

The thought of paying for school scares me too.

TV sucks.

So I bought one of those digital converters this week and hooked it up.

What a pain in the ass.

We use regular indoor antennas and, although the picture quality isn’t the best, we can receive most of the channels.

With the converter box, I get NJN and ABC. Oy vey.

We did this… and then we did this

249: Space Needle on Tuesday morning
I liked Seattle. I would move there if I had the money.

193: no boogers!
On Friday, we visited Fremont. Maurine posed by a statue of Lenin and bought an overpriced dog collar. I climbed and rolled around on a giant troll sculpture that kinda smelled like pee.

203: pike place market
On Saturday morning, we went to Pike Place Market. It seems like a nice place to visit when there aren’t a ton of people there.

208: space needle
We also went to the Space Needle on Saturday. We took pictures while trying to listen to whoever was playing at Bumbershoot. It was chilly and somewhat expensive for an elevator ride and a view.

On Sunday, we went to Bumbershoot. I read on the ticket that you can’t bring cameras with detachable lenses, so I left my camera at Tina’s apartment. WHEN WE GOT THERE AND I SAW ALL THESE PEOPLE WITH CAMERAS LIKE MINE. ARRRGGGHHHH.
We saw:

  • Saul Williams, who I probably wouldn’t have seen if Maurine wasn’t a fan. I thought it was going to be music, but he recited his poetry, talked, and answered questions. He was probably my favorite out of all the people we saw that day.
  • Daniel Clowes & Adrian Tomine. You can see Tina on the right side of the picture. I am barely visible on the left side.
  • Strange Fruit.
  • The Black Keys.
  • Stone Temple Pilots. (It was exactly like the last time I saw Scott Weiland live. I was freezing and impatiently waiting for the band to start.)
  • 075
On Monday, we went to the Seattle Aquarium. I took more photos of fish than of Seattle. Giant Pacific Octopuses (Octopi?) are awesome and I always thought sea otters were about the size of a shoebox. Wrong, Denise… WRONG.

My set of Seattle Photos: assemblyline
Maurine’s set of Seattle Photos: pennydreadful
